Architect Shares Unique Design Strategy That Raises the Bar for Naples-Area Condos

November 29, 2022 | Read Time: 4 minutes

As the ninth and final address within one of the most sought-after golf and beach club communities in Southwest Florida, a challenge to set a new standard of excellence with every aspect of The Island at West Bay was set. Architecture firm Garcia Stromberg was the first to achieve that vision with a unique design for the 24-story condominium tower that represents the cutting edge in design and architectural innovation. Let’s meet Peter Stromberg and learn more about how this Southwest Florida condo provides the ultimate indoor-outdoor Florida sanctuary.

What Was the Inspiration Behind The Island’s Building Design?

“Our initial thought when we saw the site was that it’s such an amazing location, a secluded island-like property surrounded by vast nature preserves. We wanted to ensure that every residence within The Island at West Bay enjoys 360-degree views, especially the view to the west overlooking Estero Bay and the Gulf of Mexico beyond. Our concept was to design a very efficient building with four residences on each floor surrounding a central core – almost in a pinwheel fashion. This allowed us to create a building with 86 corner residences, each surrounded by as much glass as possible to enhance the spacious 10-foot ceilings and provide its own unique view.”

How Were the Residences Designed to Accentuate Those Views?

“We very carefully positioned the rotation of the building to ensure that every residence has a spectacular view of Estero Bay and the Gulf of Mexico. When future residents drop off their cars in the enclosed parking garage and ride up the elevator to their private terrace, we want them to feel like they’re entering their single-family residence in the sky. Every person can walk into their home and enjoy these long views across the nature preserves, mangrove-lined estuaries, or the Gulf beyond. A lot of thought was put into the lower floors as well. They might have a different perspective of the horizon, but they have oversized private terraces, which provides the residents more outdoor living space. This creates different feelings throughout the building vertically.”

How Will the Penthouses be Different from the other Residences?

“The Island will feature six penthouses in total with four of the spacious residences on the 23rd floor, and two larger residences on the 24th floor. Residences on the 23rd floor offer 3,250 square feet of air-conditioned living space, and those on the 24th floor offer 6,025 square feet of air-conditioned living space, with an additional 1750 square feet of outdoor terrace. All penthouses will have 12-ft ceilings. Penthouses on the 23rd floor also include a private 2 car garage while those on the 24th floor will have a 3-car garage. These residences provide premium views of Estero Bay and the Gulf of Mexico and embody luxury high-rise living at its finest.”

What Was the Inspiration Behind The Island’s Two Levels of Amenities?

“The idea for The Island’s amenities was to incorporate many of the private amenities at the arrival level, but utilize the rooftop to provide a spectacular swimming pool and entertainment areas with 360-degree views. It’s a space to be enjoyed by every single resident. On the arrival level, a club room, fitness center, a large family pool and separate lap pool will create a gathering place and sense of community amongst residents. Then, residents can ride the elevator up to the rooftop for a completely different experience. The sunsets up there are second to none, and the north and south views along the coastline are just spectacular. Some residents may choose a lower floor to take advantage of the extraordinarily large outdoor terraces knowing they can still easily enjoy the pinnacle of the building. They can grab a bottle of wine, jump into the elevator, and head up to the rooftop deck. Within minutes, they’re walking out onto some of the most amazing views in the world.”
